Appropriate Technology
Began in 1998 with the goal of improving the quality of life in rural communities in Guatemala. The strategy is to use local resources that are readily available and apply these resources to solve practical problems that affect the daily lives of family. Appropriate Technology has served many families in rural communities by installing dry-compost latrines, rain-catchment in ground water cisterns, poultry projects, and hundreds of fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves.
The nature of the ministry of Appropriate Technology opens many doors to share the Gospel when installing these projects in people’s homes. New friendships are made and trust is gained to share Christ, in both word and through actions, with the recipients of these projects.
With the completion of the community outreach center in San Pedro el Cerro, the ministry has been involved in the revitalizing of a local church. The ministry of Appropriate technology has helped cast new vision and expanded outreach opportunities into the local village.
The community center now provides space for an expanded women’s ministry focusing on cooking and nutrition classes, and a natural setting to study God’s Word in small groups. Medical and dental teams from North America are hosted through Mission Impact in various communities where Appropriate Technology has a long-term commitment.
Introducing technology to young people is an “attention grabbing” way to get this generation involved in the transformation and future of their own communities. This has opened the door for industrial arts classes in the public schools, teaching welding and basic metal shop skills. A recent new area of ministry for Appropriate Technology has been the managing of a greenhouse and using hydroponics to grow vegetables.
